Mr Clicky
The Amazing Maurice and His Educated RodentsMr Clicky is a clockwork device that Darktan’s No. 1 trap squad sends ahead through tunnels to test for hidden traps. Its value lies in being able to trigger a trap without costing a living scout: a trap cannot kill it because it is not alive. The device is nevertheless vulnerable to damage and loss, and its destruction during the search leaves the squad with only one replacement. In this small but consequential role, Mr Clicky turns cautious detection into a practical choice between time and safety.
Construction and Condition
Mr Clicky moves through the tunnel with a whirring noise, powered by clockwork. A key turns on its body, and a stub of candle on its back supplies light as it travels. The device is not presented as pristine equipment: young rats have chewed its ears, its string tail has been cut off by a trap, and other traps have dented its body. These marks record repeated encounters with the very hazards it is sent to find. They also make its usefulness tangible: Mr Clicky can be damaged, but its mechanical nature allows the squad to risk it where a living rat would be in danger.
The contrast between its battered exterior and its special immunity is central to how it works. Mr Clicky is not invulnerable; a trap can snap shut on it and leave it unusable. What it avoids is being killed. That distinction makes it expendable in a practical sense, but not limitless: the squad has a finite supply, and each lost device makes the next test more consequential.
Testing the Tunnel
During the advance, Darktan notices that the soil ahead looks disturbed. Mr Clicky is sent onward while the rest of the squad watches. The trap snaps; the candlelight goes out, and a gear wheel rolls back down the tunnel to Hamnpork. The sudden silence and returning piece of machinery mark the test’s result without requiring a living scout to enter the trap’s path. Darktan then orders the squad to bring out the other Mr Clicky and sends half a dozen members with a rope to dig out and remove the trap.
The sequence shows that the device is part of a working procedure, not merely a warning signal. Its passage tests the ground; the trap’s activation identifies a hazard; and the squad must then clear that hazard before continuing. The candle, whirring mechanism, and rolling gear make the danger legible to those behind it. Once Mr Clicky is caught, however, detection does not by itself solve the problem: the trap still obstructs the tunnel and must be dealt with by the squad.
Caution, Speed, and Scarcity
Hamnpork objects that testing the ground is slowing the group down and presses for faster progress. Darktan complies outwardly, but points out that only one Mr Clicky remains and dryly suggests that the town may need a pet shop. His response exposes the cost of treating caution as delay. The device has already been lost to a trap, and sending the remaining one ahead is no guarantee that the squad can continue testing safely afterward.
The exchange also distinguishes the leaders’ immediate priorities. Hamnpork emphasizes speed; Darktan’s orders preserve a method for finding and clearing traps, even as he must continue under pressure to move. Mr Clicky makes that disagreement concrete: it is both a tool that allows the squad to advance and a scarce resource whose loss narrows their options. Darktan’s remark about the pet shop lightens the moment, but its practical point is serious—the squad cannot assume that another device will be readily available.
Narrative Function
Mr Clicky gives the tunnel’s hidden danger a visible, mechanical form. Rather than having the characters discover a trap through injury, the scene lets a clockwork scout trigger it; the extinguished light and returning gear then register the cost of the test. The device’s battered state shows that this is not its first encounter with danger, while the dwindling supply makes each new test matter. Through Mr Clicky, the narrative sets Hamnpork’s impatience against Darktan’s careful procedure and shows why caution consumes time and equipment even when it prevents a worse loss.
